2018 Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival!
Could you get a more iconic venue than paddling in Victoria Harbour? With a variable backdrop of dramatic thunderstorms & sunny intervals along with the famous Hong Kong skyline presiding over the dragon boat CArnival, you could not ask for a more spectacular setting.
Cuke nation took to the waters to compete in a ferocious 400m standard mixed boat race. With the first 5 teams across the line in each heat gaining automatic entry into the semi-finals, positions being filled with the next 5 fastest times posted across all heats and the final positions being filled by the fastest in the repechages.
We drew the toughest heat of the day and matched the cracking pace down the course placing a tight 8th place. We posted a fast enough time to qualify automatically to the semi-finals as did all boats in our heat…highlighting what a “slobber-knocker” of a race it was.
Our break was extended the courtesy of the localized thunderstorms and then with little warning, the organizers declared it was race time again. We had a last minute scramble to retrieve some of our cuke paddlers from the movies, dim sum feasting & sightseeing tours but managed to get all of our team to the start line on time.
We put up a valiant effort but did not qualify for the finals this year.
A fantastic end to the first half of our racing season. Enjoy the break Cuke Nation, we’ll see you back on the water in September
